A senior Russian military officer is dead. He was killed by a car bomb in Moscow. Officials say it looks like an assassination.
The incident happened on Monday morning. Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed the death. The officer is Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov. He was 56 years old.

Reports say a car exploded in a parking lot. The location was Yaseneva Street in Moscow. The time was around 7 a.m.
General Sarvarov was inside the vehicle. It was a Kia Sorento. He was on his way to work at the Russian defence ministry’s office.
The explosive device was fitted to his car. The blast caused severe injuries. Early reports said he had shrapnel wounds, broken bones, and a fractured face. He was first said to be gravely wounded. Officials later confirmed he died from his injuries.
Who Was He?
Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov held a key position. He was the head of the Department of Operational Training for the Russian armed forces. This means he was responsible for training and preparing military operations.
Who is Suspected?
An official spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee spoke. Her name is Svetlana Petrenko. She said investigators are looking at many possible leads. One main line of enquiry is that Ukrainian intelligence services planned the killing.

A Pattern of Attacks
This is not the first time a high-ranking Russian officer has been targeted. In December 2024, a similar attack happened. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was killed. A bomb hidden on an electric scooter exploded outside his apartment.
Ukraine’s security service claimed responsibility for that attack. Kirillov was the chief of Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces. His assistant was also killed.
