March 16: A viral video showing a Bengaluru influencer being confronted over her clothing choice has sparked a nationwide debate on moral policing and personal freedom in India.
The influencer, identified as Shriyanshi, was reportedly filming content on a city street when an elderly woman approached her and criticised her outfit.
The video quickly spread across social media, gaining more than 1.4 million views before Shriyanshi later deleted the post from her account.
What Happened in the Viral Video
According to reports, the incident took place during a street photoshoot in Bengaluru. Shriyanshi, a model who frequently travels between Delhi and Bengaluru, was preparing to record a video about the stress of city life.
She was wearing a white top, black shorts, and furry boots when an elderly woman approached her and began speaking in a regional language.
Based on translations shared online, the woman told the influencer that “short clothes do not look good on women” and suggested she should wear traditional outfits such as a churidar or trousers in public spaces.
The woman reportedly clarified that she had no problem with filming itself, but objected to the clothing choice.
Influencer Praised for Staying Calm
Despite being publicly scolded, Shriyanshi maintained a calm and respectful tone throughout the interaction. In the viral clip, she can be seen apologising and trying to de-escalate the situation rather than arguing.
Many social media users praised her response, saying she showed maturity and restraint in a tense moment.
However, as the comment section became increasingly divided, the influencer eventually removed the video from her social media account.
Social Media Divided Over Moral Policing
The incident has triggered a broader debate online about personal freedom, cultural expectations, and public behaviour.
Many users criticised the elderly woman’s actions, calling it a clear case of moral policing. They argued that individuals should have the freedom to wear what they want without facing public judgment.
Others defended the woman, saying she was simply expressing her opinion about traditional values and did not behave aggressively.

This is not the first such incident reported in the city. A similar controversy recently involved yoga instructor Tanny Bhattacharjee, who also faced criticism from an elderly woman for wearing shorts in public.
In that case, the woman reportedly followed Bhattacharjee to a parking area while raising her voice to attract attention from bystanders.
As social media content creation increasingly moves into public spaces, these incidents highlight the growing cultural gap between traditional social expectations and modern lifestyle choices in urban India.
