A man is dead after being shot by police in Thetford, Norfolk. The incident happened on Sunday night, December 28. It began with reports of a two-car crash.
Police were called to London Road at about 8:25 p.m. They received reports of a collision between two vehicles. According to officers, one man left the crash scene. He was believed to be the driver of one of the cars. Witnesses said he was carrying what looked like a handgun.
Armed police officers responded to the scene. A short distance away, they encountered the suspect. Police shot the man. Emergency services tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Road Closures and Investigation
The major A11 road has been shut overnight. It is closed in both directions. The closure is between the Thetford Ranges roundabout and the Brandon Road roundabout. Drivers are being advised to follow diversion routes.
Assistant Chief Constable David Buckley of Norfolk Constabulary spoke about the event. He said such incidents are very rare. He acknowledged the event would worry the local community.
A full independent investigation has already started. The police have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Norfolk Police say they are cooperating fully. They will provide bodycam footage and 999 call recordings.
Police stated they are not looking for any other suspects connected to the incident.
