A recent Jeopardy! Second Chance competition ended in a very close finish. The winner is Melanie Hirsch. She is an attorney who lives in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Melanie won the semi-final match. She beat two other strong contestants. Her opponents were Andrew Wang, a medical student from Illinois, and Aaron Himmel, a stay-at-home father from Long Island.
The game was a battle from start to finish. Melanie did not start strong. After the first round, she was in third place on the leaderboard.
Her luck changed in the Double Jeopardy! round. She found her momentum and fought hard. The game came down to Final Jeopardy.
Melanie got the Final Jeopardy answer correct. This secured her victory. Andrew Wang lost all his money on his final wager. Aaron Himmel also answered correctly. However, he did not bet any money, so his score stayed the same.
After her win, Melanie decided to talk about the experience online. She shared her thoughts on the social media site Reddit. She posted on December 24, 2025.
Melanie’s Reddit Post: Goals and Gratitude
In her post, Melanie listed the personal goals she had for her Second Chance game.
First, she wanted to talk about her job. She works for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). During the show, she shared what the agency does.
“I work at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau,” she said on the show. She explained it is a federal agency created after the financial crisis. It protects Americans with mortgages and credit cards. She added, “in that time we have gotten 21 billion dollars back to consumers.”
Her second goal was to get a Daily Double question right. “I missed two in my first game,” she wrote on Reddit. This time, she succeeded.
Her third goal was about Final Jeopardy. She wanted to answer correctly. She also wanted to put a heart in her response for her children. She achieved both of these goals as well.
Melanie expressed amazement at her win. She called the competition “triple tight.” This means all three players were very close in skill and score.
“That I got to do all that and also win still boggles my mind,” she wrote. She praised her competitors, Aaron and Andrew. She said any one of them could have won. She ended by hoping the exciting game was a “good Christmas present” for the audience.
Preparation and Perspective
In an interview with The Baltimore Banner, Melanie talked about preparing for the show. She said studying was key to her victory.
“I honestly don’t know if I would have gotten my answer correct had I not done that preparation,” she said. “You never have any idea what you’re going to get, and so you have to just be prepared for absolutely anything.”
She described the entire Jeopardy! experience as “remarkable” and a “delightful surprise.”
Melanie also shared how studying trivia helped her. For the past ten months, she focused on learning facts. She studied world capitals, U.S. presidents, and Oscar winners.
She called this a “very good coping mechanism.” It helped her focus on “things that are known and true and certain” during uncertain times.
With this win, Melanie Hirsch advances in the Jeopardy! Second Chance tournament. She will compete for a spot in the next Tournament of Champions.
