Pune, January 8, 2026: India mourns the loss of Madhav Dhananjaya Gadgil, the eminent environmental scientist, ecologist, and activist, who passed away at his Pune residence at the age of 83. Gadgil was widely recognised as one of the key thinkers shaping India’s modern environmental movement.
A Life Dedicated to Ecology and Conservation
Madhav Gadgil’s work spanned decades, focusing on biodiversity, conservation, and the role of local communities in protecting nature. In 1983, he founded the Centre for Ecological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Under his leadership, the centre became a major hub for ecological research and environmental policy studies in India.
Gadgil was particularly known for chairing the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP) in 2010, which produced the landmark Gadgil Report in 2011. The report recommended strict protection measures for the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats, advising limitations on mining, quarrying, large dams, and polluting industries. While the report faced resistance from some state governments, it remains influential in discussions on floods, landslides, and sustainable development in the region.
Legacy and Recognition
Throughout his career, Gadgil combined modern scientific training with traditional ecological knowledge, studying under Harvard’s E. O. Wilson and returning to India to build research capacities. He played a key role in movements such as Save Silent Valley and contributed to forest conservation in Bastar. His influence extended to shaping policies for the Botanical Survey of India and the Zoological Survey of India.
He received multiple national honours, including the Padma Shri (1981) and Padma Bhushan (2006), alongside global recognition for his work in environmental thought and public policy.
Tributes and Remembrance
Former Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh paid tribute to Gadgil, calling him “a pre-eminent ecologist, tireless researcher, pioneering institution-builder, and a true scholar.” Ramesh highlighted Gadgil’s humility, empathy, and mentorship, noting his lasting impact on students, policymakers, and local communities alike.
