On March 10, 2026, a surprising discovery on a beach in Mexico caught global attention after a video showed two rare oarfish stranded near the shore. The deep-sea creatures, often called “doomsday fish” in folklore, were spotted along the Baja California Peninsula.

The video quickly spread across social media, leading to speculation and curiosity around the mysterious species. However, marine scientists say the sighting is unusual but not a sign of an upcoming disaster.

Rare Deep-Sea Fish Appears Near Shore

A woman walking along the beach recorded the moment she noticed two long, silver fish struggling in shallow water. The creatures had ribbon-like bodies and unusual movements, which made the clip go viral online.

These animals are known as oarfish, the longest bony fish species in the world. Some can grow over 30 feet (9 meters) in length.

Oarfish normally live far from the surface. They stay in the mesopelagic zone, a deep layer of the ocean that can reach around 3,300 feet below the surface. Because of this extreme depth, humans rarely see them alive.

Why People Call Them “Doomsday Fish”

The nickname “doomsday fish” comes from Japanese folklore. Old beliefs claim that oarfish rise to the surface before earthquakes or tsunamis.

The myth gained attention after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, when several oarfish were reported along Japanese coastlines months before the disaster.

Since then, every unusual sighting tends to trigger speculation online.

Scientists Say There Is No Disaster Link

Marine researchers say there is no scientific proof connecting oarfish sightings to earthquakes or other natural disasters.

Experts believe the fish may appear near shore due to changes in ocean conditions, such as:

    • shifts in ocean temperature

    • unusual underwater currents

    • storms or injuries

    • climate cycles like El Niño or La Niña

Authorities in Mexico also confirmed that no unusual seismic activity has been detected in the region.

A Rare Opportunity for Marine Research

For scientists, the discovery is valuable. Studying oarfish in their natural environment is extremely difficult because they live so deep in the ocean.

When specimens appear near shore, researchers can learn more about their biology, diet, and behavior.

Local officials are now encouraging residents to report any additional sightings along nearby coastlines. More discoveries could help marine biologists better understand this mysterious species.

    Why This Discovery Matters

Although myths still circulate online, experts say events like this are simply rare encounters with deep-sea wildlife.

The appearance of two oarfish at the same time makes the discovery even more unusual and important for research.

For now, scientists view the sighting not as a warning sign but as a unique glimpse into one of the ocean’s most mysterious creatures.
