A massive record was broken at the IPL auction on Tuesday. Australian cricket star Cameron Green made history. He became the most expensive overseas player ever bought in the Indian Premier League.
The Kolkata Riders, also called KKR, bought him. They won a huge bidding war against another team. Their final bid was a stunning 25.20 crore rupees.
This beat the old record for an overseas player. That record was held by another Australian bowler, Mitchell Starc. KKR had also bought Starc for 24.75 crore rupees in 2024.
Now, Green is the third-most expensive player in all of IPL history. Only two Indian players, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, have ever been sold for more money.
The 26-year-old all-rounder shared his joy right after the auction. He sent a video message to KKR fans.
“I’m so excited to be part of Kolkata for this year’s IPL,” Green said. “To get down to the Eden Gardens, to get used to the atmosphere. I hope it is a great year for us. So see you soon. Ami KKR!”
The auction took place in Abu Dhabi. The room was full of excitement. KKR and the Chennai Super Kings, or CSK, fought hard to buy Green.
The bidding started at a base price of 2 crore rupees. It quickly shot up past 20 crore rupees in just a few minutes. CSK made the last bid of 25 crore rupees. But KKR made the final offer of 25.20 crore to win.
There is an important new rule to know. Because of a new BCCI rule, Green will not get the full 25.20 crore rupees. For overseas players in a mini-auction, there is a salary cap of 18 crore rupees. Any money a team bids above this 18 crore limit does not go to the player.
The extra money, in this case 7.20 crore rupees, will go to a special fund. This BCCI Players’ Welfare Fund helps other cricketers.
Cameron Green is a highly valuable player. He is a talented fast bowler and a powerful batsman. His addition will make the Kolkata Riders team much stronger for the 2026 IPL season.
