Prince William, the future King of the United Kingdom, has made a surprise request to his father, King Charles, asking him to take stronger action against microplastic pollution at royal residences. The Prince of Wales, known for his environmental work, is pushing for practical steps to reduce microplastics and protect the planet for future generations.

Prince William Visits Climate Tech Company Matter

On Thursday, Prince William visited Matter, a climate technology company that tackles microplastic pollution in water systems and textiles. Matter was a 2025 Earthshot Prize Finalist, recognized for its innovative work preventing microplastics from entering waterways.

During his visit, the Prince was shown a ball of red microfibres collected from just ten washes of red towels, along with samples from textile manufacturing processes. He called the findings “absolutely atrocious” and said he was “genuinely horrified” by the scale of the problem.

“I can’t get over the size. It is absolutely atrocious,” William said.

“I’m very glad we had our filters on our washing machines.”

Filters Already Installed at Royal Homes

Following the visit, Prince William reportedly had microplastic filters installed at his new London home, Forest Lodge, his apartment 1A inside Kensington Palace, and his country residence, Anmer Hall.

He has also urged King Charles to consider installing similar filters across all royal residences to reduce pollution and set an example for sustainable living.

    King Charles’ Environmental Leadership

King Charles has long been a champion of environmental causes. His royal residences already feature solar panels, electric car charging ports, and other eco-friendly initiatives. The official royal website notes: “For more than five decades, The King has used his unique position to champion action for a sustainable future.”

Prince William’s initiative aligns with the King’s environmental vision and highlights the royal family’s commitment to tackling climate change and plastic pollution.
