Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh | February 5, 2026 — A 26-year-old postgraduate medical student, Battula Deepika, died under suspicious circumstances in Vijayawada, police said on Thursday. The incident occurred while she was undergoing treatment at a government medical college hospital.

Deepika was a third-year postgraduate student in the Anesthesiology department and a native of Ananthapur district.

What Happened on the Night of the Incident

According to police, Deepika complained of uneasiness after having egg fried rice for dinner, which she had shared with her junior. Around midnight on Wednesday, she developed severe stomach pain and vomiting.

Her junior allegedly administered an injection to provide relief. However, when the junior returned after a short time, Deepika was found lying unconscious on a table, police said.

Shifted to ICU, Declared Dead

Deepika was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Doctors administered saline and conducted a CT scan in the early hours of Thursday.

Despite medical intervention, she was declared dead around 6 am, officials confirmed.

Cause of Death Yet to Be Determined

Police said the exact cause of death is not yet known and will be determined after the post-mortem examination. The death has been classified as suspicious, given the sequence of events.

“A case has been registered, and we have begun a detailed investigation,” a police official told PTI.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are examining all aspects of the incident, including medical treatment provided and circumstances leading up to her collapse. Further details are awaited pending forensic and post-mortem reports.
