New Delhi, February 10: Students at Hansraj College staged a protest against the lavish wedding of Principal Rama Sharma’s son, alleging misuse of campus infrastructure. Social media posts show the college adorned with pink and white tents, while workers prepared for the event. Some hostel buildings were reportedly used to accommodate wedding guests.
The Hansraj College wedding protest comes as students claimed that the decorations and arrangements disrupted academic and extracurricular activities. According to the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the annual ‘Khelo Hansraj’ sports tournament was rescheduled to make way for the wedding.
“The principal treats our campus like a private estate while students continue to face restrictions and inadequate facilities,” said Asikul Islam, Secretary of SFI’s Hansraj College unit.
SFI also highlighted that students are often denied permission to use campus grounds for events like freshers’ welcomes and farewell functions, while hostel facilities that were closed for nearly a year were temporarily repurposed for wedding guests.
Delhi University Registrar Vikas Gupta clarified that the principal lives in a college-allotted residence and has the right to host personal celebrations.
“The principal lives in the college-allotted residence and can host celebrations. This is not the first time such an event has been held, and she is allowed to organise events,” Gupta told ANI.
Protesting students demanded full access to campus facilities, a probe into infrastructure use, and a ban on private events on college premises, warning of further action if their concerns are not addressed.
