General Qamar Javed Bajwa served as Pakistan’s 16th Chief of Army Staff from November 2016 to November 2022. He was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1980 through the 16th PMA Long Course and belonged to the Baloch Regiment. Throughout his military career, he held several key command and staff appointments.
Before assuming the role of army chief, General Bajwa served as Inspector General Training and Evaluation (IG T&E) at General Headquarters (GHQ). He also commanded the strategically important Rawalpindi Corps (X Corps), considered one of the Pakistan Army’s most significant operational formations. In addition, he served in various international roles, including assignments with United Nations peacekeeping missions.
In August 2019, the government led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan granted General Bajwa a three-year extension in service. The extension was later validated through legislation passed by parliament. He completed his extended tenure and formally retired on November 29, 2022, handing over command to his successor, General Asim Munir.
Since retiring from active service, General (R) Qamar Javed Bajwa has largely stayed out of the public eye, making limited public appearances.
