On April 2, officials confirmed that Jonathan the Tortoise is alive and healthy on the island of Saint Helena.

A viral rumor on social media falsely claimed that the famous tortoise had died at the age of 193. The story spread quickly online, but authorities have now confirmed the report is completely false.

How the Death Hoax Started

The rumor began on April 1, 2026, when a fake account on X posted a message claiming Jonathan had “passed away peacefully.”

The account pretended to belong to Joe Hollins, the longtime veterinarian responsible for Jonathan’s care.

The post included an emotional tribute describing Jonathan as a “gentle giant who outlived empires, wars, and generations of humans.”

Soon after posting the message, the account shared a cryptocurrency wallet address and asked followers for “memorial donations.”

Officials Confirm Jonathan Is Alive

Authorities on Saint Helena quickly denied the viral claim.

Nigel Phillips personally confirmed that Jonathan was alive and well. He even visited the tortoise at Plantation House to verify the situation.

A spokesperson from Friends of the British Overseas Territories also stated that the story was fake.

They confirmed that veterinarian Joe Hollins does not have an account on X, meaning the original post came from an impersonator.

Who Is Jonathan the Tortoise?

Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise believed to have hatched around 1832.

He arrived on Saint Helena in 1882 as a gift to the island’s governor.

Today, he holds a record from Guinness World Records as the oldest known living land animal.

Despite his age, Jonathan remains active. He is blind due to cataracts and has lost his sense of smell, but caretakers maintain his health with a carefully prepared diet of cabbage, cucumbers, carrots, and seasonal fruits.

Why Online Death Hoaxes Spread

Experts say death hoaxes often target well-known figures or beloved icons. These rumors can spread quickly because they trigger emotional reactions.

Scammers sometimes use fake news to trick people into sending money or clicking malicious links.

In this case, the fake account tried to collect cryptocurrency donations after spreading the false report.

Officials advise the public to verify information through official government sources or trusted news outlets before sharing viral posts.

Jonathan Continues His Remarkable Life

Jonathan remains a symbol of longevity and resilience.

Officials say the historic tortoise is expected to celebrate his 194th birthday later this year, continuing his remarkable journey that has already spanned nearly two centuries.
