Indiana University quarterback Fernando Mendoza is now a Heisman Trophy contender. This follows the Hoosiers’ historic win over Ohio State on December 6. As his post-game interview went viral, fans also noticed his mother’s strong sideline support.
His Mother is Elsa Mendoza
Fernando Mendoza’s mother is Elsa Mendoza. She was once a tennis player for the University of Miami. In 2014, Elsa received a difficult diagnosis. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), as reported by Red 94.
Elsa has always supported her son’s dreams. In return, Fernando has actively supported his mother. He works to raise funds and awareness for MS.
How Fernando Honors His Mother
In 2024, Fernando Mendoza took action to help. While playing for the University of California, Berkeley, he partnered with a local restaurant. They created the “Mendoza Burrito” at La Burrita. The goal was to spread awareness about MS. Proceeds from sales also supported the National MS Society.
Fernando told The Daily Californian he was happy to help. He said even if one person bought the burrito, it spread awareness. He hoped his actions would inspire other athletes to do similar things.
He also spoke about his mother’s role in his life. He said she gave him the confidence and unconditional support to pursue his dreams.
Continuing the Effort at Indiana
When Fernando transferred to Indiana University, he started another campaign. He partnered with BuffaLouie’s at The Gables in Bloomington. They added a special burger to the menu to keep raising MS awareness.
In an interview with Fox Sports, Fernando explained why this is important. He said it was a way to give back to his mother for all her love and support.
He also shared how his mother stays positive. He said she battles MS every day but remains a source of light and inspiration. Her attitude teaches him to stay optimistic, even after a bad game or practice.
A Family Inspired
Elsa Mendoza’s influence extends to the whole family. Fernando’s brother, Alberto Mendoza, also plays for the Indiana Hoosiers. Despite her health challenges, Elsa motivates her sons to chase their dreams.
