A huge, strange cloud has been found around a comet from another star. The cloud is 250,000 miles wide. It glows with X-rays. Scientists say they do not fully understand what it is.
The comet is named 3I/ATLAS. It is an interstellar object. This means it came from outside our solar system. The mysterious cloud was spotted by a space telescope called XRISM.
What Was Discovered?
XRISM is run by space agencies from Japan, the United States, and Europe. It detected the giant X-ray glow around the comet. The glow stretches very far into space. It covers an area millions of kilometers wide.
Harvard professor Avi Loeb commented on the finding. He said the image shows a faint but real glow all around the object. This is a big surprise. No other interstellar visitor has ever shown X-rays before.
Why Is This So Strange?
Comets in our own solar system sometimes produce weak X-rays. This happens through a process called “charge exchange.” Solar wind particles hit gas from the comet. This can create X-rays.
But the glow around 3I/ATLAS is different. It is much bigger and brighter than normal. It does not match what scientists usually see. This has left experts puzzled. They are calling the discovery strange.
What Could Be Causing It?
The XRISM team has a leading theory. They think it might still be caused by charge exchange. The comet’s icy surface heats up near the Sun. This releases gas. The gas forms a cloud called a coma. Charged particles from the Sun then hit this gas cloud. This reaction might create the powerful X-rays.
However, the size and brightness do not fit. Scientists say they need to be sure. They must check if the glow is real. Some of the signal could be camera noise or an instrument error. More observations are needed.
